Week 1 - MBA 6101 SU22- Chapter 1 Surfing the Tsunami

After reading Chapter 1 of Surfing the Tsunami, I could tell that I will really find enjoyment in picking up the book as it goes in depth on a lot of topics that are commonly known. The book goes into what Artificial Intelligence is and the endless possibilities it brings to our world.

Basically Artificial intelligence is a concept that brings  itself upon the use of robots and the mind in robotism. There is focus on the technology being used to mainly simplify the acts of life as we know it.  Many companies are already in use of having AI in their products that they sell to the public, such as Tesla having self automated cars, or even Ziprecruiter having an AI to help candidates with navigating through the career page. These companies have taken advantage of how far we have advanced with the development of computer systems that are able to performs tasks that would normally be done by a human counterpart. These tasks can be anything from just visually perception, speech recognition, translation, configuration, and more.

Usually the advancement in technology and Artificial Intelligence would bring more opportunity for convenience. But as of recently, this has only sparked the thought, “what jobs and going to work will look like in the next 10-20 years” . From my experience, most people create a bad narrative about how these new technological developments will make human labor obsolete. Though this is true, it is not completely the end results. In Todd Kelsey’s book, Surfing the Tsunami there is mention of how
“It will change jobs, and take away some, and create new ones”. Understanding the rate and ratio of this statement will be left for time to tell.

One encounter with AI, was that I was watching the news that covered another advancement in Amazon. Jeff Bezos is the owner and founder of Amazon and the news were covering how Amazon was not integrating their services in to building their first self checkout grocery store that has absolutely no employees. The reason for this being possible, Amazon began having more automated systems for the checkout lines, the doors, and the surveillance of their items which really introduced a grocery store where human labor was not needed. Though this is very fascinating, it is also very intimidating to the everyday working consumer.
